2012

January: Injury picked up during match play in Brisbane, causing withdrawal from the event. Competed in Australian Open despite injury concerns, reached R4.

Post Australian Open: Time off to recover from ankle injury.

Fed Cup: Played away tie vs Belarus. Won both matches played, helping USA secure a place in the World-Group Play-Offs.

Return to the WTA tour in Miami, won back to back tournaments Charleston & Madrid. Participated in Fed Cup tie: USA vs Ukraine which USA won 5-0. Reached Rome Quarter-Finals before withdrawing.

Roland Garros: Suffers shock 1st round loss. First time losing in the 1st round of a grand slam.

Wimbledon: Battled through despite some tough 3 set matches, served 24 aces vs Azarenka in the semi-final, breaking her own record for most aces served in a women’s singles match. Total number of aces for the tournament (singles matches): 102, setting the record for the highest number that year, male or female.

Won 5th Wimbledon Doubles title with sister Venus Williams and their 13th Grand Slam Doubles title.

Entered Stanford and defended the title.

Olympics: Won gold in singles for the first time, dropping just 17 games in 6 matches. Won doubles gold medal with Venus, 2nd straight gold medal in doubles after success at Beijing 2008 and leading to 3 gold medals in doubles overall. First tennis player to achieve the Career Golden Slam in Singles and Doubles.

Cincinnati: 19 match win streak snapped.

Miami: Won a record 6th title.

Clay Court Season: Undefeated, winning Charleston Madrid, Rome and 2nd Roland Garros Title. [Played Fed Cup tie on Hard Courts prior to Madrid.] Became the 4th woman in the Open Era to win each grand slam twice. Win Streak extended to [31-], the best win streak of Williams’ career to date. Total Grand Slam Singles titles won rises to 16.

14 June 2013 marks the two year period since Williams returned after foot surgery and recovering from pulmonary embolism.
